In Memoriam – Patrick Gregory
West Halifax, VT – Patrick Bolton Gregory, 93, of West Halifax, Vermont, died on May 27, 2025 at Grace Cottage Hospital in Townshend, Vermont. Born in New York City to Horace Gregory and Marya Zaturenska, both poets, Patrick was educated at the Lawrenceville School and the University of Virginia, where he majored in French. After graduation and army service he settled in Paris, where chance led to a job with the publishing firm Hachette. When he returned to the United States, publishing became his profession; it was a good match for his literary sensibility and wide-ranging intellectual interests. Patrick worked as an editor in New York and Boston; he also translated fiction and non-fiction from the French, and in 2004 he published a novel, The Daguerreotype. After living in Northampton, Massachusetts for almost fifty years, in 2023 he and his wife Justina relocated to the eighteenth-century farmhouse in southern Vermont where Justina had grown up. Patrick is survived by his wife; two children, Tobias (Melissa) of Washington, D.C. and Nora of Greenfield, MA; and two grandchildren. Burial will be at the family’s convenience. Donations in Patrick’s memory may be made to the Northampton Survival Center (www.northamptonsurvival.org), where he volunteered for many years.
