In Memoriam – Richard Newman

Richard F. “Dick” Newman, 88, of Northampton died on February 23 at home peacefully, surrounded by family. He was born in Northampton on September 4, 1932. Dick was the son of the late Lewis “Babe” and Katherine (Warren) Newman, Dick graduated from Northampton High School in 1951. He was a sergeant in the USMC 1951-1954.

In August 1955 he married his late wife Elsie Leduc and graduated from American International College in 1958. Dick started the Newman (Employment) Agency and then served as the tax collector for the city of Northampton for 20 years. Dick served as a city councilor from 1966-1968 as a representative from the “Baystate” section of Northampton. He was a life member of Northampton Elks lodge.

Dick and Elsie were very involved at the Hampshire Regional YMCA as all four girls were on the swim team. Dick was on the Board of Directors, Serving 10 years and as President of the Swim Teams Parents Association. After retiring, Dick volunteered for many years at the Northampton Survival Center.

In their 64-year marriage Dick and Elsie traveled extensively in Canada, the US and Europe with a family favorite being their trips to Disney World and Ogunquit, Maine with their children and grandchildren.

Dick leaves his daughters Brenda Newman of Amherst, Diane Alexander of Blandford, Lori Newman of Florence and Beverly Trushaw and her husband Andy of Florence, 6 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, sister Joan Beach (Langdon, NH),brothers (and fellow Marines) Carl and Bob Newman of Florida.

Funeral services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Dakin Animal Shelter and the Northampton Survival Center can be made in Dick’s name.
